The clang of metal and the low buzz of machinery set the rhythm inside a Versteel production facility in Jasper, Indiana. A welder moves methodically, guiding a bead along a steel frame, while a technician inspects a laser-cut component—the work here hums with practiced efficiency, each step honed over decades. But behind every weld, cut, and assembled piece, there’s more at play—a dedication to craft, a respect for materials, and the steady momentum that has propelled the company forward since the first Versteel table rolled off the line in 1985.

“Versteel is deeply committed to American-made quality, with all our products proudly manufactured in Southern Indiana,” says Phil Englert, National Sales Manager. “We often use the term ‘American-manufactured’ because we have a truly vertically integrated manufacturing process. Many of our products are entirely manufactured at our facilities. This allows us to maintain complete control over quality, materials, and production timelines.”

That level of oversight is intentional. “By keeping our operations local, we not only support the community and workforce but also ensure that every piece of furniture meets the highest standards of durability, precision, and design,” Englert says. “Our skilled artisans and engineers work closely together, blending time-honored craftsmanship with advanced technology to create innovative, high-performance products.” This philosophy has shaped Versteel’s evolution—from a small-scale operation to a leading manufacturer. Its identity is forged in metal, from chair frames to table bases and intricate components, most crafted entirely in-house and all built to last.

A Defining Collaboration

As Versteel’s reputation for excellence grew, a new design direction began to emerge. By 2000, the company had become a manufacturing powerhouse, and a collaboration with renowned Italian designers Roberto Lucci and Paolo Orlandini marked a pivotal moment in its evolution. The partnership resulted in pieces like the Chela and SIMON chairs—two highly functional designs that showcase complex metalwork. “Lucci and Orlandini’s expertise in user-centric design helped us refine our approach to form and function, ensuring every piece we create is visually striking and highly adaptable to dynamic working and learning environments,” says Englert. 

This collaboration laid the foundation for Versteel’s continued innovation, paving the way for future partnerships with designers like Francesco Favaretto, whose Aerie table and Nerita chair reflect the company’s balance of tradition and forward-thinking design. Today, Versteel continues to refine its approach through partnerships with designers both locally and globally.

Newer techniques allow for increased customization while maintaining consistency. “Our ability to blend traditional techniques with modern tools means we can offer a high level of customization,” he says. “Our Studio Steel® process, which is standard on The Maker Project, leaves telltale signs of welding and handcrafted fabrication, making each product truly unique.”

Sustainability in Manufacturing

Steel’s inherent durability has always aligned with Versteel’s commitment to sustainability, and the company integrates environmentally responsible practices across every facet of its operation. “Sustainability is at the core of Versteel’s approach to design and manufacturing, influencing everything from material selection to production processes,” says Englert. “Our commitment to responsible manufacturing drives us to create long-lasting, high-quality products while minimizing environmental impact.”

Many of Versteel’s collections integrate recycled materials and durable construction for longevity. Products like Quanta Max, Nerita, and Sate are engineered for efficiency, utilizing an injection-molding process that reduces waste and emissions. With high recycled content and extended durability, these collections offer chairs that are fully recyclable at the end of their lifecycle. Versteel’s production facilities utilize a solvent-free powdercoating process and an extensive recycling program for steel, aluminum, and wood. By integrating environmentally responsible practices at every stage—from sourcing to fabrication—Versteel reduces waste and delivers high-performance furniture built to last.
